The Pineapple Gang takes their cod fishing charters seriously. So serious, that this is their 8th year cod fishing aboard Tuna Hunter. Every year they are well prepared, well-dressed and have good success. They are all good anglers, and passionate about their fishing.

This year’s trip was no exception, and the fish cooperated – a non-stop blitz of large cod, all day long, with a breather at the slack.  Fish hit on a mix of jigs and clams. The usual. So why such a blitz? Good people, good times, plus Pineapple = Good Fishing.

The annual Nivens family reunion typically includes a Gloucester fishing charter aboard Tuna Hunter, and typical both sessions produce loads of fish, plenty to feed the extended family back home.  The 2011 bash was no exception. 

This year the morning team outshone with striped bass – over ten keepers to 40 inches. Hard to beat! The action was busy all morning, making it hard to leave to swap out for the afternoon crew.

In the afternoon, the striper action slowed, but the cod action picked up. Drift rigs for striped bass fishing where exchanged for bottom rigs for cod fishing, and soon everyone was contributed large codfish to the fish box.  Gloucester fishing at its finest!

Cod fishing is strong now through the summer.

These guys experienced a steady pick all morning, a lull at the tide change then several bouts of large cod at Tuna Hunter favorite numbers in the afternoon to top off the fish box.  Every day is a bit different, but anticipate fish hitting on jigs and bait, with slight fluctuations through the day as we move from spot to spot working through the tides.

Gloucester cod & haddock fishing is underway big time – as these anglers  from Lake Erie, New York will attest.  The  hearty group fished both Saturday and Sunday, reeling in a boatload of cod and haddock each day.

The catch was was offshore, but the long trip was worthwhile on both days. Cod were hitting mainly jigs, with the usual fluctuations throughout the day and a great late-day bite to top off the fishbox.

Spring cod fishing is finally here – Tuna Hunter is in the water ready for spring cod and haddock fishing charters.

The haddock fishing is already great, and signs indicate the cod catch we be just as strong if not better.  These early-season cod and hadodck charters are often some of the best days of the season. Time to stock up, get out on the water for some well-earned fishing time.

Happy New Year 2011 to all!

We hope you are having a calm, restful winter, aside  from snow shoveling.

With all this snow, Tuna Hunter reminds you that spring is around the corner – two more months, and Tuna Hunter will be in the water for spring cod and haddock fishing.

We are taking reservations now for April fishing charters.  Gloucester cod fishing opens April 15, and we aim to be there for a fresh start to a new season, and if nothing else to get away from all the snow onshore.

Seth Michelsen and friends have good luck with bluefin tuna, every time they go for them.  On a recent bluefin tuna charter aboard Tuna Hunter, they succeeded in boating a giant bluefin, plus two smaller bluefin, tagged and released.  That makes for a great day of tuna fishing, plus some tuna steaks for the grill.

The giant was an awesome hit on the kite – what a way to start a good angling battle.  The next fish hit on dead bait, different depths seem to be working, making the hit hard to predict, but worth the captain’s extra efforts.  The final fish was again on the kite. Kite fishing is a standard these days. We have several kites and balloons on board to meet the wind and sea conditions of the day – we have to, to consistently produce fish.

Sore arms for all, but that’s a welcome part of good fishing!
